When Anyone Can Make an ArT Toy, Why Buy Yours?

AI can generate a character in seconds. Still, why choose one Art Toy over another when collectors can design and produce their own? ArT Toy Newsletter #240

Imagine creating a character before breakfast.

A prompt generates its face.

Software builds its body.

On-demand production turns it into an object.

By dinner, it could be sitting on your shelf.

So why would anyone buy yours?

And what happens to the ArT Toy Movement when making the character becomes the easiest part?

1. A Question We Could Not Ignore

This Newsletter began with a question posted on LinkedIn by artist and creative director Klim Kozinevich. https://www.linkedin.com/in/klimkozinevich/

Looking at new character design, branding and packaging work displayed in Los Angeles, he wondered how much had been generated using AI, and whether its novelty could create lasting loyalty or find a real place in people’s hearts.

Then he pushed the question further.

If anyone can generate a character with their children and order it on a T-shirt, toothbrush or eventually a toy, why should they buy somebody else’s?

We loved the reflection because it moves the debate beyond whether AI is good or bad.

It asks what will remain valuable when almost anything can be created.

2. When Making Becomes Ordinary

For years, creating an ArT Toy required access.

Drawing, sculpting, prototypes, manufacturing knowledge, money, contacts and somebody willing to take the risk.

Those barriers are beginning to fall.

This can bring more experimentation, more creators and more visual languages into the Movement.

It can also produce millions of attractive, polished and completely interchangeable characters.

When everyone can generate novelty, novelty is no longer enough.

The achievement will not be making something exist.

It will be making somebody care that it exists.

3. Your Collector May Become Your Competitor

Klim remembered joking in 2003 that the industry consisted of approximately 500 people buying one another’s work, which explained all those editions of 500.

It is a funny story.

It is also living Memory of how the scene was built.

But the next collector may not need to wait for an artist, brand or producer to create the character they want.

They may produce their own.

And if collecting is partly about joy, could an object created with your own family feel more personal than something generated by an unknown artist online?

That question should make the entire Movement uncomfortable.

4. A Prompt Is Not A Foundation

Anyone can type a prompt and imagine they are the next Michael Lau.

But generating a convincing character is not the same as building a body of work.

A foundation comes from your experiences, obsessions, failures and decisions.

It comes from developing a point of view that continues beyond one successful image.

The human touch is not merely a fingerprint, rough surface or handmade imperfection.

It is the reason one decision was chosen while a hundred easier ones were rejected.

AI does not make authorship irrelevant.

It makes genuine authorship more necessary.

5. What Will Make An ArT Toy Special?

Physical objects will not necessarily disappear.

But infinite production may make people radically more selective.

“Special” will no longer mean merely rare, expensive or sold out.

It may mean an object connected to a credible artist, a coherent history, a trusted community and a world people genuinely want to enter.

Retail may therefore become less about offering more products and more about filtering, contextualising and creating relationships around fewer meaningful ones.

The future problem will not be making the character.

It will be giving someone a reason to choose yours instead of creating their own.

Because when everyone can make an ArT Toy, the rarest material will not be vinyl, resin or sofubi.

It will be Meaning.

Continue this reflection in our upcoming ArT Toy Files, where we explore how AI, on-demand production and infinite visual abundance could transform authorship, collecting, retail and the future of the ArT Toy Movement.
