We didn’t lose our inner child. We turned it into ArT Toys and More...with purpose.
We had another email ready for today.
A completely different one.
But then Sunday happened.
And sometimes the studio decides what the message has to be.
1. The email we didn’t send
For today, we already had a newsletter prepared.
Done. Ready. Scheduled in our heads.
But this morning, like on many other Sundays, I came to the workshop.
Just me, Sergio.
And when I come here like this, I usually end up in what I call the library.
That corner of our space where I switch everything off.
Phone away. Noise away. The world can wait.
I once read someone in the press calling it airplane mode.
I liked that.
Because that’s exactly what it is.
Disconnecting from the signal outside
to reconnect with the signal inside.
2. The workshop is also a place to think
In our studio, there are books and magazines about ArT Toys, art, visual culture, artists, exhibitions, collections, objects with memory.
But not only that.
There are also books about all kinds of things.
Ideas. People. Business. History. Psychology. Life.
The kind of books that help you understand others better.
Think better.
Work better.
Ask better questions.
And sometimes that matters as much as any figure, any painting, any print, any release.
Because what we do is not born only from what we make.
It is also born from what we read, what we question, what we underline, what we refuse to forget.
3. Rain in Bilbao. Cold. Silence. A book.
Today was one of those cold, rainy Sundays in Bilbao.
And maybe because of everything I’ve been working on these last days,
but also because of everything we’ve been building these last years,
I felt like going back to a book I know well:
Start with Why. Why Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action by Simon Sinek.
So I did what I usually do.
I took the book.
Opened it somewhere among the marked pages.
The underlined pages.
The pages full of notes I’ve written over time.
I sat down with a blank sheet of paper beside me.
A couple of pens.
And I started reading again.
And when I read like this, I never read in the abstract.
I always read with the project in my hands.
I read thinking about what we’re building now.
How to move it forward.
How to sharpen an idea.
How to make something clearer.
How to execute better.
How to stay honest.
4. Then I found something older than today
After that, I found myself at the very beginning of the book.
Those blank pages books usually have at the front.
And at the back.
I love using those pages too.
For thoughts. Fragments. Notes. Half-finished truths.
And there, on those first pages, I found something written in pencil a long time ago.
I took a couple of photos of it this morning because I wanted to share it with you here.
I’m almost sure I wrote those words while listening to Cristina.
And that makes total sense to me.
Because Cristina is usually the one who gives order to everything going on in my head.
She knows how to shape it.
She sees things clearly.
So what I found today felt less like a note
and more like a mirror.
Of who we are.
Of what we do.
Of what we want to keep doing in the years ahead.
5. What was written in pencil
This is what was there, written on those first pages:
“I think maybe we are more mature than the people who say we are immature, because we are more consistent with what we actually like.
They are more immature because they let themselves be dragged by what they socially believe is the correct thing.
We defend the way we are. We show it. We don’t hide it.
Others tend to hide because they think that’s how they fit in better with the group. And that doesn’t matter to us. The group does not get to tell us what we should like or what we should buy.
The immature ones are them, because they still haven’t dared to accept themselves, and to accept criticism from others without letting it affect them.
Do they think we are immature? Fine. I think the same about you. So there you go. We’re even.
In this world, it seems like other people always want to tell us how to behave, how to buy, what to collect, how to dress...
And in the end, those people become a collage of everyone who influences them and tells them what to do. They stop being themselves.
They become a clown. A person who paints themselves and hides what they are. They show a smiling painted face... but what is really behind that face?
We don’t have filters.
You don’t like what I buy? Then don’t be my friend. That’s fine.
Is that not what people our age are supposed to do?
Well then, I do something else. So what?”
That was there.
Waiting.
And today we wanted to share it in case some part of you needed to hear it too.
Because this is not only about us.
It is about every person who has ever been told to grow up
when what they really needed
was to grow more fully into themselves.
And maybe that is exactly why the phrase sitting at the top of the website
we are building right now says this:
“We didn’t lose our inner child. We turned it into ArT Toys and More...with purpose.”
That line is not decoration.
It is biography.
It is intent.
It is our way of saying:
we are still here,
still building,
still believing,
still turning instinct into form, memory into objects,
and rebellion into something you can actually live with.
If this resonates with you, keep reading us on the BLOG.
That’s where many of these ideas grow teeth.
And if you want to bring that spirit into your own space, explore the SHOP.
Because sometimes the most honest way to say who you are
is through what you choose to live with, collect, and Dis(Play).
See you there,
Sergio

P.S. If our English ever sounds a little imperfect or slightly forced, that’s because we write from where we truly are: in Spanish. Then we translate it with a computer, and we know it doesn’t always sound as natural as we would like. But we still do it, because we want to reach you, and we’d rather try imperfectly than stay silent perfectly.
