The Gorilla Who Understood Camus Before You Did
Camus would have understood the best Art Toys. Not because they solve life, but because they refuse to stop confronting it. ArT Toy Newsletter Number #039

Subject: What’s a Vinyl Gorilla doing Quoting Existential Philosophy?
Title: Tim Tsui, Camus, and The Rebellion Of Collecting
Subtitle: When an ArT Toy isn’t just Art… but an answer.
Hey,
Sometimes I read a philosopher… and end up thinking about an ArT Toy.
The other day I ran into this quote from Albert Camus:
“The absurd is born from the confrontation between human desire
and the irrational silence of the world.”
Camus was talking about that moment when You
desperately seek meaning in life, and the Universe responds with nothing. Silence.
Still, he said: don’t give up. Don’t lie to Yourself. Keep living.
Because it’s in that silence, in that absurd space, that true freedom begins.
And then I thought of Tim Tsui, the artist from Hong Kong behind Da TeamBronx.
In 2008, he released Da Warrior: Blood Diamond Version.
A Vinyl Gorilla with Swarovski-style crystals in the eyes and helmet.
Not real diamonds, but they sparkled like they were.
And that was the point.
A fake luxury. An ironic gem.
A bold statement:
“Art doesn’t have to be true. It has to challenge You.”
Camus rewrote the myth of Sisyphus, condemned to roll a rock forever, and said:
“We must imagine Sisyphus happy”
Because meaning is not found. It’s made.
And I think Tim Tsui’s Gorilla says the same.
We don’t need the world to make sense.
We can create our own. Through vinyl, memory, rebellion.
When You choose a figure, a painting, a fine Art print…
You’re not just collecting stuff.
